The Exterior
The west front is a severe, and very early example of 19th century Italianate architecture. Portland stone and stucco (sadly now suffering badly from erosion in places) provide an expensive show front, while the sides, which were not for public view, are constructed of plain brick.
The niches on either side of the west door were probably not designed to take statues. Behind the northern one is the gallery staircase and 'schoolroom' whilst the south hides the verger's room. The clock, by Lewis of Brighton, dates from 1860. There is one bell, a memorial to the Revd Oliver Scott, cast by Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel in 1930.
In the car park at the back of the church is a stone commemorating the extension of 1882 which reads:
In the Faith of Jesus Rev.xiv.12.
This stone was laid by Alice Winham on the anniversary of her mother's birthday,
Tuesday 27th September 1881.
The chancel was consecrated on St. Andrew's Day 1882.
