The Church - The Crypt

As well as being a fashionable place to attend for worship, St. Andrew's was also fashionable as the final resting place for members of society. Indeed the burial vaults were specifically designed to provide a steady income for the proprietor of the chapel. Reached by an exterior staircase and a heavily strengthened door, five semental barrel vaults contain row upon row of iron shelves on which hundreds of coffins could be placed. The crypt was closed for burials in 1854 by which time only 55 people had been buried there. For Health and Safety reasons it is not open to visitors.
