St Andrews is no longer used for regular worship. Rather than see this beautiful Grade 1 Listed building permanently locked, the Friends are raising money for facilities in the Church, so that it may be used all year round by the community. To join the Friends or renew your subscription, please download and print off the membership form.

St. Andrews is cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust established in 1969.   This national charity looks after over 340 of England’s finest historic churches which are no longer required for regular parish worship.

The Church welcomes you every Sunday from 2-4pm.

Please submit your name and any Sundays you are free to steward the church to Yvonne Ovey, Email: yellow_dog@sky.com

19/11/09 Bert Hobden, a Friend of St Andrew's Church, who was 94 , and had been a choir boy in the church in the 1920's passed away this morning.

In recent years Bert had fund raised and donated several thousand pounds to the Friends. He had played a central part in kick starting the fund raising efforts to have the heating system in the church refurbished.  He had taken a keen interest in all aspects in life, concerts and events at St Andrew's and will be very sadly missed.

Bert's funeral will be on Friday 27th November at 3.00pm at the Downs Crematorium in Bear Rd.  The family have aksed for no flowers but if people would like to make a donation then they have asked that donations be made to the "Martlets Hospice" via Nigel Dengate Funeral Directors at 4-6 Montefiore Rd, Hove.

People may have observed that the stonework in the clocktower had eroded badly over the last few years, and indeed, holes had appeared in it. The picture below was taken in 2008 at the time of the clock restoration - the situation has worsened considerably since then.

The Friends and the Trust are jointly funding it's repair, which accounts for the unsightly scaffolding surrounding the frontage. In a great effort to cheer up the exterior, Toni spearheaded an amazing planting team which included Lee, Penelope (with thanks to EBRA) and Steve. The plants were a most generous donation from Bert Hobden, now aged 93, who was a choir boy at St Andrews.

Renowned TV broadcaster and journalist Loyd Grossman visited St Andrews  Waterloo to present certificates of achievement to dedicated volunteers at St Andrew’s on Wednesday 17th June.  He was joined by the Trustees of The Churches Conservation Trust in a unique visit to the Church. Local MP Celia Barlow also attended.

Bert Hobden, one of the recipients of the award, is a familiar face at St Andrew’s and a supporter  of the Friends of St Andrews who have successfully organised a variety of events in the historic church and work tirelessly to keep its doors open to visitors. Bert had been a choirboy in the church 80 years ago and  keeps an active interest in the Church. Arnie Spence who is a long standing member of the Friends, also received an award.

Chairman Loyd Grossman says: “it is especially significant in our 40th year that we have the opportunity to recognise the enormous contribution that volunteers and friends have made to the Trust over the years”.

The church was transformed into a vibrant, exciting, and much admired key venue for the Brighton Fringe Festival, thanks to Fletch Productions

This beautiful building is Grade 1 Listed, so the lighting and stage rigs had to be completely freestanding!

The windows were temporarily blacked out with rollerblinds that Adam cleverly constructed to sit on existing ledges. Fleck built a freestanding frame for the drapes.

Fletch at St Andrews have just finished a very successful run at the Brighton Fringe Festival , winning awards and plaudits. Among the accolades are  an Argus Angel award in recognition of Artistic Excellence – Fletch at St Andrews Best Venue Award. Also Latest 7 award for Outstanding Contribution to Brighton Festival 2009 awarded to Fiona Fletcher (Brighton Festival, Brighton Fringe and Great Escape).

Gerry McCrudden of the Friends of St Andrews said:

‘’We are delighted at the success of Fletch at St Andrews being able to play such a full part in the Fringe. It was good to see our Church by the Sea being at the centre of the community again. We have had many thousands of visitors to the Church over this past month at various Fringe events. We hope these new friends will return to see us again.’’

"For your comfort and safety..... "

New pew cushions make attending our events a much more comfortable experience.

Updated fire-fighting equipment and illuminated Emergency Exit signage complete our efforts to make St. Andrews a top class venue.

2008 saw the restoration of the clock which had not been working for a generation This was made possible by the Friends and the Churches Conservation Trust

The Clock Restoration is complete! The pictures above show the clock components before restoration.

It's hard to believe that these are the same parts. Only one component had to be remade as it was beyond re-use.

The clock mechanism was built by Lewis of Western Road Hove in 1869. It had suffered at the hands of the corrosive sea-air over many years. It is fascinating to see how ornate the mechanism is, even though it was designed to be concealed from view in the bell tower. The clock bell and striking mechanism will be renovated, but local residents may be pleased to hear that the strike will be silenced during night hours. There is no quarterly chime, just an hourly strike.

Successful fundraising efforts from events organised by Ellie Sampson, Jo Heard and Toni Tye have made this possible, along with a significant contribution from the Churches Conservation Trust

Adam Tubero has given us a rare insight into what is to be found in the Crypt at St Andrews.

See some of his photos in the history section of the website.

If you (or anyone you know) would like to use the church for a performance, exhibition or an event, please contact Gerry McCrudden, (our Events Co-ordinator), by email gerrymccrudden@hotmail.com
